Shame that this is happening but it will unfortunately. Having read your link, this isnt about CBGBs not being able to afford the rent, its about BRC wanting to redevelop the builing.
Thay are being unreasonable in order to force CBGBs out of the building. That is what they want to do.
I don't know what comercial rents are like in NY but this price must be stupid or any half decent entrepreneur would snap it up just for the brand name. Its worth 30.000 dollars a month in T-shirts and mercandise. I suspect CBGBs will close on this site, whatever, and re open in a different venue like the Marquee did in London.
The only fuck up there was that they increased the capacity so much they ended up being too big for the up and coming bands and just too small to attract the larger names. An expensive lesson.

The Marquee has re-invented itself several times now, some attempts more successful than others. For the business to survive, it must move with the times and remain relevant to the next generation, rather than living on the reputation that some guy booked a few decent bands before they got big 30 years ago.

Move somewhere else, get a guy that recognizes talent that will appeal to the current crop of paying customers, job done.

Redevelopment is probably not a bad thing. There's probably 30-year old crap still sitting in those toilets.

Just my 2 cents

Love n kisses,
Stace xx

Well said Gal. This just a case of going through your old clothes and not wanting to chuck something out becuase in holds a memory. As you said, the Marquee exists now because it is a great brand. The original one in Wardour Street was damp, the bogs smelt awful and flooded, and the bar area was so small you might get served twice all night. When it moved to Charaing x road it was miles better but still maintained the feel of the old one without the bad bits. They even used the same stage boards from the old one. Rich Rags played there 11 times and it was still an awesome experience to walk out on the same stage as the Stones and Hendrix.
The legend of CBGB's will remain wherever it is.

Nah! We'll have to agree to differ there, mate. THE Marquee was in Wardour Street. Its decline started the day it moved.

Everything should be done to keep CBGB's where it is. They could spruce up the bogs a bit though...

CBGB's is a dump, it is supposed to be dump, the walls are covered with stickers of all the bands from years past , along with ramblings scrawled in marker, it does just fine for talent, small bands want to play their because it is CBGB's, big bands want to play there because it is CBGB's.

just sign the petition

not that much to ask
